Recently, members of the Decorative Materials team traveled to Portland, Oregon, for an unforgettable visit to Pratt + Larson. Known for their extraordinary range of handcrafted ceramic tile, distinctive glazes, and endless customization possibilities, Pratt + Larson has long been one of our favorite partners.
From touring the factory and meeting the artisans to exploring new designs and learning about their creative process, our visit offered a deeper appreciation for the people, artistry, and craftsmanship behind every tile.
The Art of Handmade Tile
One of the biggest takeaways from our visit was the remarkable number of skilled hands involved in creating a single tile.
Throughout the factory, we watched the process unfold, from forming and shaping the clay to creating patterns, developing glazes, hand-painting, firing, inspecting, and packaging each piece. Every step involves talented individuals who have mastered their particular craft, contributing their expertise to the finished product.
What impressed us most was the care and pride each person brought to their work. Rather than a traditional manufacturing line, the factory felt like a community of artists, each playing an essential role in creating something truly unique.
Seeing the entire process firsthand gave us a new perspective on the time and skill behind these materials, as well as a greater appreciation for the lead times involved in producing genuinely handcrafted tile.
The Creative Process
Pratt + Larson’s extraordinary glaze palette has always been one of the things that sets them apart, but witnessing the process behind those colors made it even more impressive.
We learned about the science involved in developing and perfecting glazes, including the expertise required to create custom colors and achieve consistent results. Their ability to explore new combinations and color-match specific design visions opens up remarkable possibilities for customization.
Another fascinating discovery was how Pratt + Larson incorporates modern technology while preserving traditional craftsmanship. Their team begins by drawing patterns by hand before using digital modeling and 3D printing technology to create tools that transfer those designs onto clay. It’s a thoughtful balance of innovation and artistry, allowing technology to support the creative process without replacing the human touch.
Collection Highlights + Creative Collaborations
Among the many beautiful designs we explored, the Tortoise glazes were a particular favorite. With rich color variation and beautiful movement, shades like Chestnut, Cognac, and Harbor Mist create an almost organic, animal-inspired effect that becomes even more captivating when multiple tiles are installed together.
Beyond tile, Pratt + Larson’s collaborations with artists and other creative partners were another highlight. From decorative sconces and custom mirrors to unique tabletops, these pieces demonstrate how their materials can extend beyond traditional tile applications and become functional works of art.
Rooted in Portland, Made with Purpose
Perhaps one of the most memorable aspects of the visit was experiencing the culture behind Pratt + Larson. There is a genuine sense of community throughout the showroom and factory. The people are passionate about their work, supportive of one another, and deeply connected to Portland’s creative spirit.
We were also impressed to learn about their commitment to thoughtful material use. Their clay is sourced through a local Portland supplier, and excess clay from the tile-making process is repurposed rather than discarded.
Combined with their collaborations with local artists, these practices reflect a company that values creativity, community, and the resources behind its products.
Bringing the Inspiration Home
Our visit reinforced what makes Pratt + Larson so special. In a world increasingly focused on uniformity and mass production, their commitment to handcrafted artistry, creative exploration, and individuality feels more valuable than ever.
Seeing the process firsthand gave our team a deeper understanding of the craftsmanship behind each tile and greater confidence in sharing that story with designers and clients. From custom glaze development to intricate mosaics and unexpected design applications, the possibilities are truly remarkable.
We returned to Colorado inspired by the creativity we witnessed, grateful for the relationships we strengthened, and excited to share an even greater appreciation for Pratt + Larson with our design community.
More than anything, the experience reminded us that behind every beautiful tile are talented people, thoughtful processes, and a genuine passion for creating something extraordinary.
